This month we're celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Desi (APID) Heritage Month at Squarespace! Going forward, our API ERG will be known as the APID ERG. Adding Desi to the ERG namesake helps illustrate the expansive spectrum of cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity within the Asian community. As a company, we'll be celebrating APID Heritage Month with the theme "Strength in Diversity," which symbolizes the wide array of backgrounds, experiences, and traditions that form the vibrant fabric of the APID community. Stay tuned for a look inside our ERG programing as well as employee features highlighting our APID community all throughout the month ✨

We’re celebrating Asian Pacific Islander Desi (APID) Heritage Month at Squarespace. We asked August Tang, member of APID ERG What’s a cultural tradition that you’ve made your own and how? "Wearing a jade bangle is a tradition among women in my family. Ironically, I only ever started wearing my jade bracelet after I came out as trans and nonbinary. Jade is usually fitted to the tightest size for your wrist, never to be taken off. If the bracelet breaks, it’s a symbol of protection: an absorption of whatever danger caused the break. This is an aspect of the jade bangle I believe in and find comfort in. I also love that I can reclaim an item of jewelry that is traditionally deemed for women, while still preserving the spirit and symbolism of the original tradition. I put on my jade bracelet six years ago. My jade is not only physically linked to myself, but my heritage, ancestors, and family back home." #thisissquarespace #APIheritage

We asked APID member, Joy Simmons what important cultural tradition you want to pass on? “I want to pass on the tradition of preparing traditional Hawaiian foods for a Lu’au. It’s a lot of work, and most people decide to cater their food. My ‘Ohana still does the traditional Imu (underground oven), wrapping Lau Lau’s, diving for tako to make squid luau, and picking ‘Opihi. The next generation needs to know it’s not about cooking but about showing Aloha to the land/ocean, each other, and our culture.” #ThisIsSquarespace #APIDHeritageMonth

As a Filipina-American daughter of immigrants, APID Month is a special time for me to honor the cultural backgrounds of myself and others, to reflect on the traditions & accomplishments of past generations, and to celebrate all of our unique identities. There is already so much complexity in my own Filipino culture – one can imagine the even greater beauty of diversity to be found within the bigger Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi sphere! There is so much to be valued within our unique cultural and ethnic experiences, and I have found that embracing – rather than downplaying or ignoring – our diversity paves the way for us to better learn from each other and grow together. This APID month, I'm excited to not only reflect on my own cultural experiences, but I'm passionate about helping foster an environment where we can open ourselves to the 'Strength in Diversity'!” #ThisIsSquarespace #APIDHeritageMonth
